Valhalla Cinema Transformation

The iconic Valhalla cinema in Glebe underwent a major transformation from a cinema to a boutique office building incorporating the original lobby, 4 shops and 38 office studios. This sensitive development retained the art house cinema atmosphere and art deco style whilst providing fully functional work studios, each with timber floors and independent air–conditioning units. The existing roof over the shops was converted to an open air deck servicing units and common areas facing Glebe Point Road.  A passenger lift and disabled access were provided to the building.

The Valhalla was listed on the National Trust Register in 2005 as it was recognised by the Trust that “The Glebe Valhalla is a rare and significant example of a 1930’s suburban cinema”.

The Valhalla took 12 months to build and approx 12 months to design and document. Cube Projects was on the design team along with award winning architects “Tanners”and provided critical input into the build-ability of the works. Floor depths were kept to a minimum using a unique floor design with all services concealed within the floor space of no more than 302mm. The project was completed on time to the day.
